Material selection for nutrition & supplements

Mineral phosphates, vitamin B12 forms, amino acids, coenzyme Q10, botanical extracts and carriers for food supplements, fortified foods and sports and powdered nutrition. In this sector, the chemical form of each nutrient, its declared content and its documentation matter as much as its function in the formula.

What the application needs. Calcium and phosphorus fortification commonly uses tricalcium phosphate and dicalcium phosphate, which also act as flow agents and tablet fillers, while monopotassium and dipotassium phosphate supply potassium and phosphorus and buffer powdered drinks. Vitamin B12 is available as cyanocobalamin, hydroxocobalamin, methylcobalamin (mecobalamin) and adenosylcobalamin (cobamamide), and the form must match both the product concept and the list of permitted forms in the target market. Coenzyme Q10 (ubidecarenone), L-lysine and L-phenylalanine are used in supplements and specialised nutrition. Standardised botanical extracts, such as ginseng, reishi, liquorice and citrus flavonoids including hesperidin, are sold on their marker-compound content. Maltodextrin, dextrose and trehalose serve as carriers, diluents and energy sources, and sorbitol and mannitol powders are used as tablet and chewable-tablet excipients.

Key specification parameters. For mineral salts, agree the elemental content, such as calcium or phosphorus, rather than just the salt assay, together with heavy-metal and fluoride limits and particle size for suspension or tabletting. For vitamins, agree assay on a stated basis, the form (pure crystalline or diluted on a carrier) and the declared overage policy. For B12 triturations, confirm the carrier and the potency per gram. For amino acids and coenzyme Q10, agree assay, specific rotation or the relevant identity test, and residual solvents. For botanical extracts, agree the marker compound and its test method, the extraction solvent, the drug-to-extract ratio, and contaminant limits for pesticides, heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Microbiological limits apply to every powder.

Recommended product types. A calcium supplement tablet typically combines a calcium phosphate with binders and a small amount of lubricant. A B12 capsule or spray uses a diluted B12 form for accurate dosing. A sports drink powder combines maltodextrin and dextrose for carbohydrate, phosphates or citrates for buffering, and flavourings. Botanical products should be built on extracts whose specification states the marker compound and the method used to measure it.

Handling notes. In Great Britain and the EU, the vitamin and mineral forms permitted in food supplements are listed in legislation derived from Directive 2002/46/EC, and botanicals must also be checked for novel-food status and for specific labelling triggers, such as the statements required for liquorice above set levels of glycyrrhizinic acid. Claims about health effects must be authorised before use. Protect vitamins and coenzyme Q10 from light, heat and oxygen, and keep hygroscopic powders sealed. Request the specification, certificate of analysis, allergen, GMO and origin statements for each ingredient, and request the certificate scope with your quotation if you need specific certifications.

Nutrition & Supplements — industrial solutions from Bio Green Foods

    Products for Nutrition & Supplements

Tricalcium Phosphate (TCP) — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Tricalcium Phosphate (TCP)

Tricalcium phosphate (E341iii, CAS 7758-87-4) is a white, practically insoluble calcium salt. That insolubility makes it both a taste-neutral calcium fortificant and one of the most effective anticaking agents for powders and table salt.

Dicalcium Phosphate (DCP) — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Dicalcium Phosphate (DCP)

Dicalcium phosphate (E341ii, CAS 7757-93-9) is calcium hydrogen phosphate, a white insoluble powder. It is both a calcium and phosphorus fortificant and a slow-acting leavening acid that releases gas late, during baking rather than mixing.

Maltodextrin — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin (CAS 9050-36-6) is starch hydrolysed only partway, to a dextrose equivalent below 20. It is bland rather than sweet, dissolves readily and is used as a bulking agent, carrier and fat replacer rather than as a sugar.

Glucose — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Glucose

Glucose, also called dextrose (CAS 50-99-7), is the simple sugar obtained by fully hydrolysing starch. It is about 70 percent as sweet as sucrose, browns readily in baking, and lowers freezing point more than sucrose at equal weight.

Sorbitol Powder — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Sorbitol Powder

Sorbitol powder (E420i, CAS 50-70-4) is the crystalline form of the same sugar alcohol, used where a dry, direct-compressible bulk sweetener is needed. Unlike the liquid grade it is comparatively non-hygroscopic in the crystalline state.

Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate (MKP) — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate (MKP)

Potassium dihydrogen phosphate (E340i, CAS 7778-77-0) is the acidic potassium phosphate, giving a solution near pH 4.5. It is used as a buffer, a mineral source and a fermentation nutrient where sodium must be avoided.

Dipotassium Hydrogen Phosphate (DKP) — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Dipotassium Hydrogen Phosphate (DKP)

Dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (E340ii, CAS 7758-11-4) is an alkaline buffering salt. Its best-known job is stopping non-dairy creamer from feathering when it hits hot coffee, by holding the pH above the point where the proteins curdle.

Cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12) — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12)

Cyanocobalamin (CAS 68-19-9) is the stable, synthetic form of vitamin B12 used for fortification. It is the most heat and light resistant of the cobalamins, which is why it is the default in beverages, cereals and premixes.

Hydroxocobalamin — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Hydroxocobalamin

Hydroxocobalamin (CAS 13422-51-0) is the natural transport form of vitamin B12, retained in the body longer than cyanocobalamin and used where a depot effect is wanted.

Mecobalamin (Methylcobalamin) — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Mecobalamin (Methylcobalamin)

Mecobalamin (CAS 13422-55-4) is the naturally occurring coenzyme form of vitamin B12, specified where a supplement is positioned as bioidentical. It is markedly light sensitive and needs protective packaging.

Cobamamide (Adenosylcobalamin) — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Cobamamide (Adenosylcobalamin)

Cobamamide (CAS 13870-90-1) is the mitochondrial coenzyme form of vitamin B12, the cofactor for methylmalonyl-CoA mutase. The most light sensitive of the cobalamins.

Ubidecarenone (Coenzyme Q10) — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Ubidecarenone (Coenzyme Q10)

Coenzyme Q10 (CAS 303-98-0) is a fat-soluble quinone central to mitochondrial energy production. Practically insoluble in water, so the delivery system matters as much as the assay.

L-Lysine — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    L-Lysine

L-Lysine (CAS 56-87-1) is an essential amino acid and the first limiting one in cereal-based diets, which is why it is the highest-volume amino acid added to food and feed. Usually traded as the hydrochloride.

L-Phenylalanine — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    L-Phenylalanine

L-Phenylalanine (CAS 63-91-2) is an essential aromatic amino acid, used in nutrition and as the raw material for aspartame. Products containing it require a phenylketonurics warning.

Ginseng Extract (Total Ginsenosides) — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Ginseng Extract (Total Ginsenosides)

Panax ginseng extract (CAS 90045-38-8) standardised from 10% to 80% total ginsenosides, for food supplements, functional drinks and powders. Compare quotations on the same assay method, since UV and HPLC results differ considerably.

Reishi Mushroom Extract — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Reishi Mushroom Extract

Reishi mushroom extract (Ganoderma lucidum, CAS 223751-82-4) in 20%, 30% and 50% polysaccharide grades for food supplements, teas and functional drinks. The polysaccharide assay method matters, since some methods also count added carriers.

Licorice Root Extract — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Licorice Root Extract

Licorice root extract powder (CAS 68916-91-6) standardised to 7% glycyrrhizic acid, the sweet, flavour-enhancing principle of liquorice, for confectionery, beverages, seasonings and flavour compounding. Supplied in 25 kg fibre drums or 1 kg bags.

Hesperidin — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Hesperidin

Hesperidin (CAS 520-26-3), the principal flavonoid of sweet orange and other citrus, in 90%, 92% and 95% grades for food supplements and functional foods, and as the starting material for diosmin.

Dextrose — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Dextrose

Dextrose is glucose in crystalline form, supplied as the monohydrate (CAS 5996-10-1) or anhydrous (CAS 50-99-7). Its negative heat of solution is what gives confectionery a cooling mouthfeel.

Trehalose — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Trehalose

Trehalose (CAS 99-20-7) is a disaccharide of two glucose units joined by an unusually stable linkage. At about 45 percent the sweetness of sugar, it is valued less for sweetening than for protecting proteins and starch during freezing and drying.

Mannitol Powder — feedstock option for Nutrition & Supplements

    Mannitol Powder

Mannitol (E421, CAS 69-65-8) is a six-carbon sugar alcohol that is notably non-hygroscopic, unlike most polyols. That is why it is the standard dusting powder for chewing gum, where a hygroscopic powder would turn sticky.
