About This Product
Reishi mushroom extract is prepared from Ganoderma lucidum, known in China as lingzhi, and carries CAS number 223751-82-4. It is offered in grades of 20, 30 and 50 percent polysaccharides, the beta-glucan-rich fraction on which reishi extracts are normally standardised.
Reishi has been used for centuries in East Asian tradition and is now a mainstay of mushroom supplements, teas and functional drinks. Its polysaccharides, largely beta-glucans, are the basis of the grade, while triterpenes such as the ganoderic acids give the extract its bitterness. As with other mushroom extracts, the polysaccharide figure depends heavily on the test. The common phenol–sulphuric acid method measures total carbohydrate, so it also counts any starch or maltodextrin present, whereas beta-glucan-specific methods report the fraction that actually comes from the mushroom. Grades should therefore be compared on the same method, and the use of carriers confirmed. In the EU, reishi has a history of use in food supplements, and other food uses should be checked against the novel food rules.
It is used in food supplements in capsule, tablet and powder form, reishi teas and instant drinks, syrups and oral liquids, and functional beverages.
