Ginseng extract is prepared from Panax ginseng and carries CAS number 90045-38-8. It is standardised on total ginsenosides, the triterpene saponins such as Rb1, Rg1 and Re that are regarded as the plant's characteristic constituents, and is offered in grades from 10 to 80 percent.
Ginseng is one of the best-known botanicals in food supplements, energy and wellness drinks and traditional tonics, and it is dosed on its ginsenoside content. The single most important point in buying it is the assay method. A colorimetric total-saponin method responds to a broad range of saponins and typically reports a higher percentage than HPLC, which sums individually identified ginsenosides, so two extracts labelled with the same figure can differ considerably in real content. Grades and quotations should therefore always be compared on the same method, together with the plant part used. In the EU, health claims for ginseng remain under review with other botanical claims, so wording on pack should be checked against the rules of the target market.
It is used in food supplements in capsule and tablet form, ginseng drinks and functional beverages, instant powders and teas, confectionery and traditional tonic formulations.
