About This Product
This is a compostable coating resin, supplied as a pellet compound for extrusion coating and lamination onto paper and board. Paper food packaging is almost never plain paper: it carries a thin polymer coating for grease and moisture resistance, and this resin is the compostable substitute for the polyethylene normally used to provide it. It is a compounded blend rather than a single resin, so it carries no single CAS number, and it is compostable at end of life.
The coating is the reason coated paper packaging is so awkward to dispose of. Polyethylene is what holds liquid in a cup and grease out of a board, and it is also why coated cups and board are difficult to repulp and are rejected by composting: the repulper wants the fibre and cannot easily free it from the film, and the composter sees a plastic layer that will not break down. A pack of that construction sits between the paper and the plastic streams and in practice is taken by neither. Coated with this resin, the board can be composted whole, fibre and coating together, which gives the pack a route it can actually be put down rather than a claim about one of its components. The coating still has to do the original job, and that is a question of continuity as much as of thickness: grease and moisture resistance come from an unbroken layer, so a thin spot at a crease or a score line is a leak path whatever the average coat weight says. Coating weight and the resulting grease and moisture barrier are therefore set against the pack and its contents, since a dry bakery wrap and a filled carton are not asking the same thing of the coating. It is used in coated paper cups, food board and cartons, grease-resistant wrap and compostable packaging programmes.
