About This Product
This is a mineral-filled compostable compound for disposable cutlery, supplied as a pellet compound for injection moulding on standard equipment and supplied FDA compliant for food contact. The mineral phase is dispersed through the polymer during compounding, so the pellet is a two-phase material rather than a single resin. It carries a heat resistance rating of 85C and is compostable at end of life.
Most compostable cutlery is unmodified PLA, and unmodified PLA goes soft in hot food. Anyone who has watched a fork bend in a hot meal knows the problem, and it is the single biggest reason food businesses go back to plastic. What is happening is not melting: the polymer passes through a temperature range in which the chains gain enough mobility to slide past one another, stiffness collapses across a narrow band, and an unfilled grade has very little margin above room temperature before it gets there. Rigid mineral particles change that in two ways, because they do not soften at all. They carry load directly at temperatures where the polymer around them no longer can, and they hold back the chains anchored at their surfaces. This compound is mineral-filled and rated to 85C, which puts it above the temperature of most served food, and that rating is worth reading against the hottest thing you actually serve rather than against an average. The filler also adds the stiffness a knife needs to cut rather than tear, which is the other half of why disposable cutlery gets rejected at the table. The trade is toughness: a stiffer, filled part is less forgiving if it is levered hard against a plate rim. Supplied as a raw material for processing on your own line.
