About This Product
This is a compostable straw compound carrying a heat-resistant modification rated to 80C, supplied as a pellet compound for tube extrusion and supplied FDA compliant for food contact. It runs on the same tube extrusion equipment as the cold drink grade, so a single line can produce both and the changeover is a material change rather than a tooling one.
Hot drinks are where compostable straws most often fail, because unmodified PLA softens well below the temperature of fresh coffee or tea. A glassy thermoplastic holds its stiffness only while it is below its glass transition; above that the chains gain mobility, the modulus falls away, and a thin-walled tube that was rigid a moment earlier folds under the light side load of a hand or a stir. A straw that bends in the cup is worse than no straw, because it fails after the drink has been served rather than before. The heat-resistant modification raises the temperature at which the wall yields under load, to a rating of 80C, so the straw stays stiff through a hot serving. Wall thickness and the cooling and draw of the extruded tube also bear on how a finished straw behaves in service, so the drawn tube is worth confirming on the line. Supplied as a raw material for processing on the buyer's own line; we do not produce finished articles.
