About This Product

This is a compostable moulding compound for disposable chopsticks, supplied as a pellet compound for injection moulding and supplied FDA compliant for food contact. It is a compounded blend rather than a single resin, so it carries no single CAS number, and it is formulated towards the rigid end of the range for a long, slender part. It is compostable at end of life.

Disposable chopsticks are either moulded plastic or timber, and both are awkward: the plastic persists, and the timber represents a very large volume of wood consumed for a few minutes of use. Displacing either one means meeting what the format actually demands, which is unusual for a moulded part. A chopstick is held at one end and loaded at the other, so its entire working length is unsupported and any softness in the material shows up directly at the tip, where a couple of millimetres of give is the difference between lifting food and dropping it. The section is fixed by how the pair has to sit in the hand, so the stiffness of the compound is the only variable left. Surface finish matters as much, and for two separate reasons: the item goes into the mouth, so flash, seam lines and a tacky feel are noticed immediately, and the grip on the food depends on the texture the tool leaves being reproduced faithfully in the moulding. This compound moulds chopsticks that are rigid enough not to flex when lifting food, with the surface finish the format needs, and are compostable at end of life, which suits an item that leaves the table with food on it. Supplied as a raw material for processing on your own line. We do not produce finished articles.
